Reaction With Alkalies and Bleaching Action :

Go Back

Reaction with alkalies :

2F2 + 2NaOH —> 2NaF + OF2 + H2O
        (cold dilute)

2F2 + 4NaOH —> 4NaF + O2 + 2H2O
         (hot conc.)

Halogen other than fluorine (Cl2, Br2, I2) react with NaOH as follows,

                       15oC
X2(g) + 2OH —————> X + OX + H2O
         (cold dilute)                   (hypohalite ion)

                           70oC
X2(g) + 6OH —————> 5X + OX3 + 3H2O
            (hot conc)                     (halate ion)

Bleaching action of halogen : Cl2 acts as bleaching agent, its bleaching action is permanent. Cl2 water can also act as ink remover.
