NITROUS ACID (HNO2) :

It is prepared by adding ice cold dil, HCI or dil, H2SO4 to a well cooled solution of any nitrite ( NaNO2, Ba(NO2 )2 etc.).

NaNO2 + HCI ——→ NaCI + HNO2

2KNO2 + H2SO4 ——→ K2SO4 + 2HNO2

It oxidizes H2S to S,KI to I2 and acts as a reducing agent in presence of strong oxidizing agent, i.e., it reduces acidified KMnO4 , K2Cr2O7, H2O2etc. to and H2O respectively.
