It is obtained by heating white phosphorus at 470K under high pressure (4000–12000atm) in an inert atmosphere.

It has a double layered structure. Each layer is made up of zig-zag chains with P - P - P
bond angle of 99o
. Since it is highly polymeric, it has high density. It is the most stable (inactive) form of phosphorus and has a black metallic luster. It is a good conductor of heat and electricity.
